Freedom is a complex issue and I agree with what your classmate said that day... I would like to recommend a wonderful author to you. His books approach the idea of freedom and what are the things we need to survive without ties. You might have heard his name: Henry D. Thoreau. He wrote "Walden" after trying to live with almost no material possessions in the wood. I also enjoyed "In the duty of Civil Disobedience".
